Back in 1905, the year of this street’s birth, English-speaking Angelenos regularly employed the Spanish spelling of “canyon”: cañon. That tilde above the “n” is all-important in nailing that “ny” sound but was forgotten when Canon Crest Avenue was named on the LeMoyne Terraces tract. Of course the name alludes to the road cresting above a canyon (really a ravine). It was the only English – or should I say semi-English – street name on the tract; see Frontenac Avenue.
