Eastmont Avenue

In 1922, real estate developer (and future failed Los Angeles mayoral candidate) Carlin G. Smith established a new subdivision here. Noting its location between East L.A. and Montebello, he dubbed his creation “Eastmont”, a portmanteau of the two neighborhoods. Aside from its titular avenue, Smith named most of Eastmont’s streets in honor of men who were working for him at the time, some only briefly: Leonard A. Belden, E. Noel Bagshawe (misnamed Bradshawe), William E. Gerhart, William H. Hoefener (misnamed Hoefner), Charles J. Keenan, Eugene T. Leonard, John R. Sadler, Herbert P. Simmons, Frank W. Williamson, and some unlucky chaps whose streets were later renamed.
