Grandview Avenue

One might find “Grand View” a dubious moniker for a cemetery, seeing as how its residents have no view whatsoever, but that was the name given to Glendale’s first graveyard in April 1891. More to the point, April 1891 was when the men behind the six-month-old Palm Valley Cemetery Association decided to rebrand it the Grand View Cemetery Association. The earliest recorded interment I could find at Grand View Cemetery was a Mrs. Lavina Banker in February 1894; there may have been burials there before then, but claims that Grand View started out in 1884 as the “Glendale Cemetery” are unfoundedThe twenty acre property was purchased in 1919 by new owners who rechristened it Grand View Memorial Park. That same year – coincidentally or not – the surrounding neighborhood, which had adopted the Grand View name, was annexed by the City of Glendale. This street came to life one year later.
