Hargis Street

Named in 1922 by and for property owner Andrew Marion Hargis (1863-1929). A farmboy from rural Illinois, Marion Andrew Hargis moved to Grand Island, NE in 1885, transposed his first and middle names, and cofounded the Grand Island Business College at the tender age of 21. Three years later, he married Ida Mabel Evans (1862-1937), who would likewise switch her first and middle names and teach at his college. The school evidently proved successful: when the couple and their daughter Helen Emmalee Hargis (later Hill, 1898-1982) came to Los Angeles in 1913, they had the money to snap up real estate all over town. (They themselves would live in Los Feliz.) Hargis anointed three other streets on this 1922 tract: Emmalee (now Beverlywood), Olin, for his brother-in-law Frank Olin Evans, and Gibson, namesake unknown.
