Named for developer William Hamilton Hay (1864-1946), who co-owned the Crescent Heights tract. In fact this street was originally called Hay Avenue when Hay and Charles E. Norton opened the tract in 1905. Four blocks away is another street sort of named for Hay: Havenhurst Drive. (For more about William Hay, see that entry.) In 1913, Hay Avenue was extended north of Sunset, and said extension was dubbed “Hayworth”. Why? No idea. Regardless, the entire street became Hayworth by 1922. P.S. If you’re wondering if this street inspired actress Margarita Cansino to adopt “Rita Hayworth” as her stage name… it didn’t. Rita’s mother was Volga Hayworth, a Broadway showgirl.
