Named in 1960 by developer Barry Taper (1930-2001) as a tribute to a London street named by his father Mark Taper (1901-1994), of Mark Taper Forum fame. “Millmark” was the elder Taper’s portmanteau of “Millie” – the nickname for his wife Amelia Taper (1909-1958) – and “Mark”. That street was named in the 1930s, before the Tapers left London for Santa Monica, and was initially known as Millmark Road. It is located in the South London neighborhood of Brockley, where Mark Taper also named a street “Barriedale” after his young son. (For more on Barry Taper, see Barrywood Avenue.)
