Named in 1938 by Violet Emily Motz (1896-1984), who co-owned a tract here with Henry Hugh Wheeler (1892-1977), her future husband – and I mean distant future. Motz was born into a large German American family in Waukesha, WI. By 1920, she was living in Los Angeles with her married sister Winnie and working as a bookkeeper for the Corona typewriter company. She was serving in the same capacity for Henry Wheeler by 1929; he was a former educator who ditched class to run a “decomposed granite” (a.k.a. gravel) company, which brought him great success. He was also married: he and his first wife Helen had two kids. Helen died from diabetes-related causes in 1955 and Wheeler wed Motz the following year. They must have figured that, after more than a quarter century of working together, they’d get along well enough as husband and wife.
