Pearl Street was laid out in 1887 due east of Lincoln Blvd. On a tract filled with woodsy street names like Cedar, Pine, Maple, and Oak, Pearl was an obvious outlier – and no, there’s no such thing as a “pearl tree”. The incongruity has me stumped. I assume that real estate man Random Abial Crippen (1831-1894), who owned the tract (and had quite a flashy moniker himself), christened the streets therein; however, I found no Pearls in his family or any special reason why he might have chosen the name. In any event, the portion of Pearl Street east of Barrington was born in 1923-1924 as Loquot (sic) Street, after the fruit. It was quickly renamed.
