Named by Abram Ehle “A.E.” Pomeroy (1838-1928) on his De Soto Heights tract in 1888. Pomeroy was a Michigan boy who came to California with his family in the 1850s and made his name in San Jose as hardware store owner, banker, and Santa Clara county clerk. In 1871, three years after the death of his first wife Jennie (26 years old, cause unknown), Pomeroy married Florence A. Wilcox (1851-1928) and they eventually adopted a son: Walter. The trio moved to Los Angeles in 1881-1882 and Pomeroy soon became a heavy hitter in SoCal real estate, cofounding the future cities of Long Beach, Gardena, La Puente, Hermosa Beach, Temecula, and Pismo Beach – yes, all of them. He was also involved in local schools and served as chairman of the L.A. Board of Education. In a macabre coincidence, A.E. Pomeroy died just three hours after his little brother George and twelve days before Florence. See La Puente’s Stimson Ave. about Pomeroy’s friend and business partner Charles Stimson.
