Named in 1924 on a forty acre industrial tract partly owned and developed by the Southern Pacific Railroad. Since the street leads to its old tracks, it’s possible that “Sperry” is a twist on the company’s initials: SPRR. That’s just an educated guess, mind you; there were plenty of Angelenos named Sperry at the time (but none associated with this tract as far as I could tell), and Sperry Flour was a popular product – too bad its mill was nowhere near here. So for now I’ll go with Sperry being a play on words. Even less decipherable are the three other streets born on this tract: Brazil, Cutter, and Exchange.
