The former Garey Avenue was renamed Trinity Street by city ordinance on May 8th, 1889. Over a hundred street names were changed in that ordinance, and the committee that chose their new identities often looked to California counties for inspiration. The convoluted etymology of NorCal’s Trinity County begins with Trinidad Bay, named in 1775 by Spanish explorers on Trinity Sunday, which celebrates the Holy Trinity: Father, Son, Holy Spirit. That’s the story, anyway. Trinity Street is one of L.A.’s few county-themed streets that still bear their 1889 names, along with Fresno, Humboldt, Merced, Mono, San Benito, and Siskiyou. Others such as Butte, Colusa, Inyo, Kern, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Tulare, and Yolo are long gone.
