This tiny byway, which has but one house addressed upon it, was aptly called Short Street in 1920. City ordinance changed it to Unit Street in 1926: similar in meaning if dissimilar in name. Usually this sort of stunt is designed to prevent conflicts with like-named streets elsewhere within city limits. However, Los Angeles still has two competing Short Streets: one in Boyle Heights and one in Rustic Canyon, so go figure. (There’s also a Short Avenue in Del Rey and a Short Way in Highland Park.) To add further indignity, this Short Street – that is, today’s Unit Street – was named several years before the other two. You’d think its seniority would have mattered.
