Calmada Avenue

Calmada Avenue was named in 1946 just north of 4th Street (now La Cuarta); Calmosa Avenue was added a year later. Both were laid out on the property of Elsie Bacon Reese (whose family gave their name to Bacon Road) and marketed as a tract called Reese Heights. The streets were likely named by the tract’s sales agent Dan E. Strub. “Calmada” and “Calmosa” – both mean “calm” in Spanish – certainly suggest serenity, and serene living is a classic real estate sales pitch. Strub (or whoever) might have also taken the “Cal-” from nearby California Avenue, itself named way back in 1891.
