Named in 1920 for five-year-old Andrita Glassell Somers (1915-1976), great-granddaughter of Glassell Park namesake Andrew Glassell (1827-1901), whose heirs owned this land. Our subject was born in Los Angeles to realtor Milton C. Somers and his wife Andrietta (née Glassell; her own unusual first name was a portmanteau of her parents’: Andrew Jr. and Rietta). In 1938, after graduating from Marlborough School and UCLA, Andrita went to Hawaii, where she met local boy Richard H. Wescott. She hula’ed down the aisle with him two years later. The couple returned to the mainland in 1944, had their second of two children, and began running various sporting goods and recreational businesses. It appears Andrita passed away at the Wescotts’ summer home in Mammoth Lakes. Several streets around here are named for Glassell family members, including Drew Street and Toland Way.
