Locals might well wonder, “Who is Ben Nevis”? More like what is Ben Nevis. It’s the highest peak in Scotland – and the entire United Kingdom. Ben Nevis Avenue and its sister street Loch Nevis Avenue, named after a sea inlet some 25 miles from the mountain, were laid out in 1952 on a tract owned by Benjamin Bernard Karger (1898-1993) and his wife Hazle (née Trenholme, 1901-1989). Ben is Gaelic for “mountain” but obviously Karger knew that it matched his own first name (he went by “Ben”). For what it’s worth, he was a Montreal Jew and Hazle came from North Dakota with roots in Yorkshire, England, so there was no special Scottish connection here.
