It’s probably not coincidental that the Glendale Elks Lodge (No. 1289) abuts this street, even though the lodge itself is addressed on Colorado. The original clubhouse here was formally opened on February 5th, 1918; exactly five months later, the Glendale Board of Trustees voted to change the former 7th Street to Elk Avenue. But note that Elrose Avenue, a one-block street east of Adams, was also renamed Elk on this date. Might the “El” in Elrose – a nod to landowners Elmer and Rosila Williams – have influenced the street’s new name? One final coincidence – or not: the 1918 clubhouse was destroyed by an unknown arsonist in January 1986, during a time when certain lodge members wanted to raze the building and sell part of the property to developers but had been stymied by a recent city ordinance prohibiting the demolition of historic structures. Draw your own conclusions.
