Named for Ira Englander (1928-2005), dear friend of – and attorney for – Barry Taper, who developed this tract. (See Barrywood Ave. for more Taper-related streets.) Englander came to L.A. from Chicago as a youth; he went on to graduate from Los Angeles High School, USC, and UCLA Law School. Along with his legal and real estate endeavors, Englander was actively involved in Native American affairs: he was an attorney for Navajo Nation; producer of the 1983 biopic Running Brave, about Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills; and general manager of the Morongo Casino, where in 1994 he was indicted for money laundering. (He pleaded guilty to one count of installing illegal slot machines.)
