Georgina Avenue

Named in 1905 on the Palisades tract, this street presumably honors Georgina Jones (1853-1936), then the most prominent Georgina in town: her husband was Senator John P. Jones (1829-1912), cofounder of Santa Monica, and her stepson Roy was one of the tract’s developers. Born Georgina Frances Sullivan into a wealthy San Francisco family, her mother died weeks after childbirth and she spent much of her childhood at boarding schools in France. She married Sen. Jones on New Year’s Day 1875, the year Santa Monica came into existence. She was his second wife – Roy’s mother Hannah had passed four years earlier. The Joneses lived at their mansion “Miramar”, current location of the Fairmont Miramar Hotel, until the Senator’s death. Their three daughters went on to colorful lives: Alice (1875-1963) married renowned sculptor Frederick William MacMonnies and lived in Giverny and Manhattan; Marion (1879-1965) became a U.S. tennis champion and wed architect Robert Farquhar; Georgina (1882-1955) got into Vedanta Hinduism, renamed herself “Sister Daya”, and teamed up with Swami Paramananda to found the Ananda Ashrama in La Crescenta.
