Named for Andrew Mullen (1832-1899) and his family. The Irish-born Mullen went to Milwaukee in his youth and made his name there as a wholesale clothier. After some years in Watertown, WI and Chicago, the now-wealthy Mullens settled in Los Angeles in 1888. The following year, Andrew cofounded Mullen & Bluett, a popular menswear store that would operate in Los Angeles until 1968. The Mullens owned this Mid-City land; in 1907, Andrew’s widow Mary (née Deane, 1836-1910) established an estate company with Isidore Dockweiler to manage it. Their daughter Marie served as company president after her mother’s passing. In 1915, sixteen acres of Mullen land were sold to build Los Angeles High School. The rest was subdivided in 1917, which is when Mullen Ave. was named. Family footnote: In 1901, another Mullen daughter, Genevieve, married G. Allan Hancock of Hancock Park fame.
