Laid out in 1922 on Martin T. Hildinger’s West Hollywood tract (see Sherwood Drive), Rugby’s original name was Roxbury Drive. But since Beverly Hills’s Roxbury Drive wasn’t far away, and WeHo itself has a Roxbury Road north of Sunset, the name was soon changed to Rugby to avoid any postal conflicts. Why “Rugby”? I think it was just because the word looked similar to “Roxbury”.
