Golf fans surely know that this roadway, upon which the Vista Valencia golf course is addressed, honors PGA legend Lee Buck Trevino (1939-). Born into a Mexican family in Garland, TX, Trevino dropped out of school at fourteen to caddy at his local country club. He taught himself the game in his spare time and honed his skills during a four-year stint with the Marines. Turning pro in 1960, Trevino first qualified for the U.S. Open in 1966. Two years later, he won it – beating the defending champ Jack Nicklaus (1940-). Trevino Drive was named in 1971, four years after Vista Valencia opened to the public and at the peak of Trevino’s career: he had just won the U.S. Open a second time and Sports Illustrated named him Sportsman of the Year. Nearby Nicklaus Drive and Hogan Drive, for golf icon Ben Hogan (1912-1997), were also laid out in 1971 but are technically private streets.
