The weirdest street name on Santa Catalina, Vieudelou was christened in 1887 or 1888 by the island’s then-owners George and Clara Shatto. My guess is that “vieudelou” was the Shattos’ mangling of the French vue de l’eau, meaning “view from the water” – and that they probably really meant vue sur l’eau: “view of the water”. (French wasn’t their first language.) Regardless, George and Clara were so enamored of this nonce word that they tried to name the road behind their Westlake mansion Vieudelou Street in 1891; the City called it Shatto Street instead.
