This street was originally called Francis Avenue after Francis Hay, whose mother Lizzie owned the 1893 Formosa tract. It was changed to Fuller Avenue in 1912. Some say the “new” name honors Robert Edward Fuller (1888-1969), a young Iowa-born oilman who split his time between Hollywood and Tulsa, OK. Indeed, Fuller would build a home at Franklin and Camino Palmero, right by Fuller Avenue. The problem? He didn’t locate here until 1913, a year after Fuller Avenue was named. Even his wife Gladys (1890-1992), née Green, who had lived in Hollywood with her parents since 1907, denied that Fuller Ave. was named for him. But she wouldn’t say who it was named for, and I don’t know either.
