The most interesting thing I can say about Alpine Drive is that it’s one of the only streets in Beverly Hills that haven’t retained their original monikers: it was born Knaresborough Drive in 1912. (The “Flats” neighborhood expanded slowly out from the 1906-1907 core that gave us Rodeo, Beverly, Cañon, and Crescent.) Like most other early BH streets, its name had no particular meaning besides sounding posh. (Knaresborough is a town in England.) I haven’t been able to pinpoint the date of its rechristening but it must have been around 1918-1919, based on references in newspapers. We can presume that Knaresborough was too hard to spell and pronounce, which is why city leaders changed it to Alpine. P.S. The portion of Rexford Drive north of Santa Monica Boulevard was originally called Gwendolyn Drive in 1912. It was absorbed into Rexford around the same time Knaresborough became Alpine.
