Adobe Avenue

Named for an adobe, first built in 1845, that still stands on the street today. Casilda Soto de Lobo (1799 – c. 1853) was behind its initial construction during her brief ownership of Rancho La Merced – the future Montebello. It was expanded by Juan Matias Sánchez (1808-1885) after he took part ownership of the rancho in 1851 and thus it carries his name. The adobe wound up in the hands of the Scott family in 1915; they finally donated it to the City of Montebello in 1972. It is the oldest structure in the city. Adobe Avenue itself was named on a 1960 housing tract.
