Named for Joseph Campbell Shorb (1878-1919), who went by his middle name. He was the son of vintner James De Barth Shorb, who owned tons of land here with his father-in-law Benjamin Wilson and named a number of streets for his kids (see Shorb Street). After the death of his father and subsequent loss of his family’s San Marino property, Campbell Shorb moved to San Francisco in 1900, along with his mother and most of his siblings. He eventually became assistant manager at the famous St. Francis Hotel. He stepped down in 1918 due to ill health, and died a year later from a post-surgical infection.
