Originally called Francis Avenue after Francis Hay, whose mother Lizzie owned the 1893 Formosa tract. It was changed to Fuller Avenue in 1912, two years after Los Angeles annexed Hollywood, as L.A. already had a Francis Avenue and there couldn’t be two within city limits. Some say the “new” name honors Robert Edward Fuller (1888-1969), an Iowa-born oilman who split his time between Hollywood and Tulsa. Indeed, Fuller would build a home at Franklin and Camino Palmero, right by Fuller Avenue. The problem? He didn’t locate here until 1913, a year after Fuller Avenue was named. Even his wife Gladys (1890-1992), née Green, who had lived in Hollywood with her parents since 1907, denied that Fuller Ave. was named for him. Someone with the City most likely chose Fuller impersonally and arbitrarily – perhaps simply because it started with “F”, like Francis.
