Nothing surprising here: Laurel Avenue owes its name to Laurel Canyon. It appears that the street was first laid out in 1887 on a development called “Cahuenga” that was never built (see Fountain Avenue about that). It was properly christened eighteen years later on the Crescent Heights tract, owned by William Hay and Charles Norton. Trivia: Laurel Avenue was briefly renamed Floral Avenue in 1923-1925, possibly to avoid confusion with Laurel Canyon Blvd. There’s still a little remnant of Floral north of Hollywood Blvd.
