The city of Los Angeles has many “woods” – Hollywood, Westwood, Brentwood – but this one’s named for its developer. The U-shaped Wood Terrace was christened in 1924 by Jacob Hager Wood (1865-1951), a Massachusetts wool merchant who came to L.A. a year earlier. He had three sons and his brother was U.S. Army general Leonard Wood, governor of the Philippines at the time Wood Terrace was laid out. That’s all I could find out about J.H. Wood. His company, the Wood Building Corporation, was located around the corner on Childs Avenue (now Griffith Park Boulevard).
