Schoenborn Street

Albert Lawrence “Harry” Schoenborn (1891-1929) was a mortgage lender who named this street in 1926 on a tract he owned between Topanga Canyon Blvd. and Canoga Ave. A native of Buffalo, Schoenborn came here in 1908 and would ultimately run the Pacific States Savings & Loan Company. He was a wealthy young man at the time of his death, with a wife (Veral) and son (Larry), a gorgeous Wallace Neff mansion in Los Feliz, and high standing in his industry. Yet he was also troubled: On April 17th, 1929, not long after suffering a nervous breakdown, Schoenberg left his home at four in the morning, clad only in his pajamas and an overcoat. He drove to a building he owned on Manning Ave., parked his car in its garage, shut the garage door, sat behind the wheel, and kept the engine running. He was discovered the next day, dead from carbon monoxide poisoning.
